Since 1984, the BMW M5 has been synonymous with the superior driving comfort associated with a premium sedan, combined with the deft handling characteristics of a high-performance sports car. Twenty-five years later, the BMW Concept M5, which made its public debut at the Auto Shanghai Show 2011, presents itself as the latest and most exciting reinterpretation of this celebrated automobile.

An intense sporty flair and signature M aesthetics in a BMW
5 Series Sedan format anchor the BMW M5 driving experience. The car’s dynamic
appearance owes itself to the body color’s Chrome Shadow, which subtly enhances
the surface contours of the vehicle’s three-dimensionally modeled bodywork.

Good looks aside, the muscular, athletic appearance of the
BMW Concept M5 serves as an indication of its engine’s power. Indeed, BMW
claims that specific design features were developed exclusively for the BMW
Concept M5 to amplify the vehicle’s performance and handling under extreme
conditions. Prominent examples of this include the large air intakes, which
allow for the engine’s higher cooling requirements, as well as optimized
aerodynamics, thanks to a discreet spoiler located on the boot lid and a
diffuser integrated into the rear apron.

A new high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology
significantly increases performance and efficiency, compared to the previous
engine. Numerous drivetrain innovations and other enhancements have lead to a 25
percent reduction in fuel consumption and emission levels. Lastly, the modulated
engine and a seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic and
M-specific suspension and steering make for a smooth, luxurious driving
experience.
