It seems apt that the pioneer of postmodern punk fashion – Vivienne Westwood – has chosen West Hollywood, a place known for its experimental tendencies, as the location for her first store in the United States. Acclaimed for its edgy and often eccentric designs, Hollywood starlets and American fashionistas have been donning the brand long before the opening of the US flagship. American singer-songwriter Gwen Stefani, burlesque artist Dita Von Teese and Sex and the City babe Sarah Jessica Parker are all A-list aficionados.
Fervent supporters including Marilyn Manson, Mischa Barton and Kirsten Davis turned up for the official launch party on March 30. The sexy Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks went a step further in her recent collaboration with Westwood, where she was last seen modelling the designer’s ‘Get a Life’ Palladium jewellery collection.
“She is my favourite designer,” Hendricks said when the collaboration was announced earlier this month. “As a young girl I would cut out pictures of her dresses from magazines, although I was never able to afford them. Even now I only have one in my closet.”
Located at 8230 Melrose, the 2000 square foot space contains not only the United States flagship, but also the brand’s showroom.
“We are thrilled to finally open our new shop in Los Angeles. We have fond memories of our time there and especially love the influence of Old Hollywood,” Andreas Kronthaler, Vivienne Westwood’s creative director, announced on the brand’s website “We look forward to opening our doors to our existing clients and introducing the brand to a new customer base.”
