The diamond in your diamond ring might be a diamond of the first water but with certification, its life will just get better. This is what gives authenticity to your diamond. When you have the right certification, it is like you have the best assurance of the quality of your diamond with you. The certification is your insurance in case the diamond gets lost or in case you need to sell it. All good diamonds today come with a certification report and you must ask your jeweller for one when you are choosing a diamond.
Diamond Rings and what Certification Means
When we talk about diamond certification, it refers to a report that is given to the person buying the diamond. This is usually a detailed report and it has to be made out by a laboratory or an accredited institution which is authorised to do so. The gemmological institutions around the world that are the most recognised are the American Gem Society, the Gemmological Institute of America, the International Gemmological Institute and the European Gemmological Laboratory. These institutes have laboratories that employ very highly trained and skilled people from all over the world. In order to qualify for a position here, a gemmologist has to have a certain bent of mind besides the right training.
Diamond Rings and Accurate Certification
Even though these institutes are perhaps the most widely respected in diamond circles, you should be prepared for slight variations of a diamond is appraised by two different ones. This is because there could be slight differences in the grading processes that are followed by different laboratories. Even though the gemmologists are very highly trained and skilled in these revered institutions, there will always be a slight difference in perception when it comes to human judgement. This slight difference is hardly worrying and does not really matter.
Diamond Rings and what the Certification contains
Here’s what most certification reports contain. The report will specify the colour and clarity of the diamond as well as its precise measurements, its weight, girdle thickness, the symmetry, the inclusions if any are visible, the polish and the depth and table percentage. It would also include any other special comments about it. Each laboratory has slightly different parameters on which they rate each stone and print out the report.
Diamond Rings and Appraisals
You must realise that appraisers are quite different from the gemmologists who are authorised to prepare reports for diamonds. Appraisers are usually jewellery store staff who can give you an estimated value of the diamond – they are not qualified to give any diamond a certification report. Appraisers have their own advantages though. When you want a quick eye run over a diamond and want an approximate value placed on it, an appraiser is a good man to do the job.
