Smallhythe Place (Kent) and Brighton-based expert Zenzie Tinker collaborated in a £50,000 restoration best described as sublime. The object in question was an emerald and sea green Victorian gown made from 1,000 beetle wings. Considered one of the most iconic theatre costumes of the time, Ellen Terry famously donned the piece when she played Lady Macbeth at London`s Lyceum Theatre in 1888.
Even those who initially find the idea of a beetle wing gown grotesque would appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the conservation process.
Zenzie Tinker commented on the significance of the restoration.
‘We have restored the original shape of the elaborate sleeves and the long, trailing hem line that Ellen so admired. If she were alive today, I’m sure she’d be delighted. She really valued her costumes because she kept and reused them time and again. I’d like to think she’d see our contribution as part of the on-going history of the dress.’
The magnificent piece is currently being shown in a new display space in the Smallhythe Place.
