In a bid to up Hainan’s commercial edge, China Duty Free Group (CDFG) announced plans for a proposed Haitang Bay Duty Free Complex in Sanya on Hainan Island in May 2011. The complex is a sprawling 350,000 square meters, with 150,000 square meters dedicated to commercial services. Two duty free and luxury stores will be built on a phased basis.
Capitalizing on the shopping boom at CDFB’s recently opened Sanya Duty Free Store, the new regulations are expected to bring an influx of luxury shoppers to Haitang Bay Duty Free Complex.
Speaking at the annual CDFG dinner in Singapore for key suppliers, CDFG Vice President Zhao Feng expressed her hopes for the introduction of the new legislation. “The change in regulations to permit domestic duty free shopping on Hainan had paved the way for a new and exciting future. Close relationships with leading international brands would be key to growth. We believe as long as we work together, the China duty free industry is bound to usher in a brighter tomorrow.”
