To add to his estate-in-progress in Scotland, Lakshmi Mittal is building an English mansion with the greenest of credentials.

The property itself, Alderbrook Park, was originally built in the 19th century but was partially demolished and then replaced in the 1950s. It is from this foundation that Mittal will erect his ecological home.

The plans include growing sufficient wood to feed the boilers which will in turn provide all the heating and hot water. In total 110 tons of wood will be cut down per year but trees will be planted to replace them.

You’ll also find solar panels as well as a system which uses outdoor temperature differences to essentially create natural air conditioning. Steel tubes will draw cool air from the estate’s wooded areas in the summer, while in the winter; solar-heated air will be drawn down from the panels to provide warmth.

Features include at least 10 bedrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, an underground art gallery, tennis courts and a croquet lawn.

The property was reportedly purchased for £5.25 million, but Mittal is expected to spend another £25 million on renovations.
