In a huge shock for Scotland, India’s Amrut Fusion has been named World Whisky of the Year by the highly respected Malt Advocate magazine.

Sold for roughly $60.00 per bottle, Amrut Fusion bears no age statement but contains no whisky aged more than six years old. What’s more, much of the whisky has spent less than four years in the barrel which are second-fill casks.

The whisky is made from a combination of Indian malted barley and peated Scottish malt, but thanks to India’s hot climate, the maturation process is far quicker than in Scotland.

Amrut’s Fusion was also named third best whiskey of the year in the 2010 edition of “The Whisky Bible.”
