Chilean-born, New York-based
artist Sebastian Errazuriz is obsessed with, according to his personal
profile, the “dichotomy of life and death”. Having garnered critical
acclaim for his avant-garde public artworks, Errazuriz’s latest chef d’oeuvre is inspired by a more intimate
space within the home – the fireplace.

Hand-carved from 600
pounds of Italian marble, the Opera Fireplace doubles as the
proscenium arch for Errazuriz’ vision of a miniature theatre. Complete with
curtains, floorboards and stairs, the sculpture comes equipped with an
elaborate scaffolding structure and several wooden figures – all painstakingly
crafted from maple logs. For those who couldn’t bear the thought of metaphorically
burning these wooden figures to ‘death’, fear not – Errazuriz provides a
re-ordering service, though we’re told that each takes around two weeks to complete.
