Billed as Asia’s biggest multihull
regatta, this year’s SEA Properties Multihull Challenge will see an exciting bonanza
of 30 yachts on the starting line daily, the introduction of two new classes and
the national championship competition for the Corsair Cup.
Now in its fourth year, the race is set to take place from July
15 to 17. As regattas go, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more visually
stunning setting as the cerulean tropical waters off Phuket, as Director of
Racing, Peter Dyer, says: “Phuket is absolutely perfect for this type of
racing. Everything is happening from Ao Chalong Yacht Club, requiring minimum
effort on part of the crew.”
“The regatta itself will be packed full of surprises due to
the unpredictable July weather, making it a pretty open race, although yachts
to watch this year are Andaman Cabriolet’s ‘Sidewinder’, Corsair Marine’s ‘Miss
Saigon’ and of course ‘Voodoo Child’ in the Firefly class.”
The Multihull Challenge looks to be an action-packed
weekend. By popular demand, the organizers will introduce two new racing
divisions, a Cruising Class and a Classic Class. The regatta continues to be
the biggest Firefly yachting race in Asia with a full
fleet anticipated in a highly competitive class, while more than 12 yachts are
expected in the Ocean Multihull Class. Corsair Marine will also be hosting
their national championship, with contestants vying to take home the
prestigious Corsair Cup.
Post-race partiers and the glamour set can choose from
celebratory events sponsored by Corsair Marine, Derani Yachts and Sea Bees at the
Ao Chalong Yacht Club, with a total of four parties taking place over the
three-day race.
